The Book that Changed the Course of my Life

“The only adequate preparation for tomorrow is the right use of today”

John C. Maxwell, Today Matters

I’m a bonafide bibliophile. I love books, and I am constantly looking for the next best book. Last month, I took a trip to Portland and fulfilled my dream of returning to Powell’s City of Books I immersed myself among floors and floors of books. I left with 8 books ( a small haul for me, hehe) and immediately started reading the first book I found: John C. Maxwells, Today Matters.

Today Matters centers around the “12 Daily Practices to Guarantee Tomorrow’s Success” It emphasizes the importance of day to day actions and how positive habits effectively shape our future. To say this book has changed my life is an understatement. I’ve always been a goal oriented person and would primarily focus on the goal and how I would reach it in the future. I would be so focused on future thinking that I would neglect the importance of living in the moment and committing to today’s success rather than the future. Progress, not perfection.

The book is divided into 12 values:

  1. Attitude
  2. Priorities
  3. Health
  4. Family
  5. Thinking
  6. Commitment
  7. Finances
  8. Faith
  9. Relationships
  10. Generosity
  11. Values
  12. Growth

Each chapter focuses on one value and introduces ways of thinking that can be incorporated on a daily basis to vastly improve your lifestyle and overall outlook on life. I appreciate how the values are broken down into chapters because it keeps the values organized and allows the reader to differentiate what actions correspond to what value. The chapters also make it easier to reference the values in the future when going back to reading the book (trust me, you will read it again). The recommendations listed in each value are not only possible but very doable and can be easily added to your lifestyle.

I recommend this book to everyone, especially goal getters who are feeling lost or stagnant in their life. I give this book a solid rating of 10/10
